Sri Lanka in two weeks: a real itinerary

Fourteen days is the sweet spot for Sri Lanka — enough time to see hills, coast, and a cultural site or two, without the relentless one-night-stand pace that ruins so many "highlights" tours. Here's the itinerary we build most often for first-time UK travellers, and why each stop earns its place.

Days 1–3: Colombo & the Cultural Triangle

Land, settle in with a single night in Colombo, then head straight to Sigiriya. The rock fortress is worth the early climb, and Dambulla's cave temples are a short drive away — both can be done unhurried in a day and a half.

Days 4–6: Kandy & the hill country

Kandy gives you the Temple of the Tooth and an evening of traditional drumming, then it's the train — book first class, reserve seats in advance — up to Ella. This three-and-a-half-hour climb through tea country is one of the most-photographed train journeys anywhere, and it earns the reputation.

Days 7–9: Ella & tea country

Stay long enough to actually walk the estates, not just look at them from a car window. Little Adam's Peak is an easy half-day hike with a payoff view; the Nine Arches Bridge is worth an early visit before the crowds.

"The mistake most first-time itineraries make is treating the hills as a photo stop instead of a place to actually stay."

Days 10–12: South coast

Down to Mirissa or Tangalle for the back half of the trip. Whale watching if the season's right, a day in Galle Fort, and otherwise — nothing. This is where the pace deliberately drops.

Days 13–14: Wind down & depart

One final slow day near the coast or back in Colombo depending on your flight, with room for a last cooking class or spa morning before the airport.

What we'd change for you

This is the shape we start from — but pace, interests, and budget all reshape it. A wildlife-led version swaps a cultural day for Yala; a family version cuts the long train journey for shorter transfers. Take the planner quiz and we'll show you the version built for your answers, not a generic one.
